New workshops!

We’re offering introductions to paper and print in the coming months, starting with these:

Introduction to Western-style paper:

In this workshop, we’ll introduce the basic principles of Western-style papermaking from rag and various other fibers using basic wove moulds. Using pre-prepared pulp from the Collective’s rag and paper-scrap collection, we’ll learn how to pull sheets that can be used in bookbinding, printing, collage — or whatever else strikes your fancy. We’ll also talk about pigments and treatments for making writing or watercolor paper, as well as the possibilities for further experimentation with the technique.

Materials will be provided. We’ll have two kinds of pulp to work with.

No experience necessary. Expect to get wet and messy — we do have aprons, but wear comfortable working clothes. The floor gets slippery in the wet room, so we recommend sneakers or other closed-toe shoes with good soles. This workshop does not count as safety training for studio rental, as we won’t be demonstrating proper use of the beater.

$175 including materials; we have a maximum class size of 8, so register soon!

Introduction to Letterpress (with movable type)

This workshop is an introduction to the basic principles of letterpress printing, from selecting paper to setting type and using cylinder proof presses. We’ll be using two presses: an automatic inking Vandercook SP-20 and a hand-inked Vandercook 2 on loan from Repeat Press. We’ll use the Boston Paper Collective’s movable (metal) type and simple linoleum blocks to create personalized stationery. We’ll provide paper, but if you wish to bring your own, feel free. We’ll be making editions of 25, so remember to bring a few extra for proofs.

No experience is necessary; this workshop qualifies as the prerequisite safety training for studio rental.

Wear comfortable clothes that can get a little inky; we try to be neat, but we find that it’s best to be prepared. No sandals or open-toed shoes, please.

$175 plus a $25 materials and type restocking fee; we have a maximum class size of 6, so register soon!
