Happy New Year!
Come celebrate your first week in the new year by making paper! Anyone who is also interested in brainstorming around a Boston Center for the Book and Paper Arts, please stop by the studio Friday January 8th 6-8. The workshop offerings for this month are the most requested types of workshops from 2009, keep the ideas coming and we hope to see you soon!
We will be coordinating a portfolio exchange of works created in the studio for the spring, e-mail if interested.
Monthly studio memberships are available.

We are working on accommodating an all kids class at the studio but until then Melinda is teaching school-aged after-school and Saturday art classes at Gallery 263 in Cambridge http://www.gallery263.com/index.php

Pulp Party

Friday January 8 6-8pm

Experience papermaking in a more social environment, bring friends and experiment with a new medium. A quick introduction to papermaking will be followed by free time at several vats with regular and colored pulps. Bring anything you want to include in the finished sheet.

Basic Papermaking from rags

January 17, 24, 31 1-3pm

Out with the old, in with the new. Learn how to recycle that beloved t-shirt into something as limitless a paper. Bring non-synthetic fiber rags to the first workshop, and watch as they are literally beaten to a pulp! Over the three days students will learn how to process fiber, pull a sheet of paper, and the possible uses for their recycled paper.

Two part introduction to marbling. This class will meet at Gallery 263 on Putnam ave. and pearl street in Cambridge.

Japanese Papermaking Workshop

Saturday January 30, 1-4 pm

An introduction to the art of making Japanese paper, called Washi, from kozo fiber (Paper Mulberry) using traditional methods. Washi is an extremely strong paper and can be used for calligraphy, printmaking, painting, shoji screens, scrolls, lamps, books and all kinds of unique projects. A brief background of Japanese paper will be followed by hands on papermaking as students prepare the vat, form sheets and press them in this one day workshop. Some decorative techniques, such as embedding pressed fall leaves or creating patterns with water (rakusui) will also be introduced. Workshop facilitator lived in Japan for 6 years and is a very experienced papermaker.
